Marginalized Workforce

Marginalized WorkforceMarginalized groups in the Nipissing and Parry Sound districts experience challenges accessing job opportunities in the labour market.  Some of these challenges result from lower educational levels and social stigma and prejudice, which leads to higher rates of unemployment and lower income levels.  As a consequence, these groups are more likely to be involved in contingent, low quality employment opportunities.  The result for individuals is often devastating (inadequate incomes, lack of meaningful work, fewer opportunities).  This results in a failure of such groups to achieve their potential and contribute effectively to the competitiveness of the regional economy.

The Labour Market Group (LMG) has partnered with a variety of marginalized groups including Aboriginals, Women and Persons with Disabilities to dispel myths and promote these groups as viable workforce components. Some partnerships have included:  Women and Work Forums, Enterprising Women events, Immigration Symposiums, Plain Talk for Persons with Disabilities handbook as well as community based forums and local industry tours for Aboriginal youth.

For information on the various LMG partnerships related to marginalized groups, please visit the partnership database via the Local Board’s link on the website.  Also, to access information regarding the local agencies who offer employment related services specific to marginalized groups, visit the Inventory of Programs and Services link on the right panel of this website.
